What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

At VisionPark Optometry, caring begins with a thorough eye examination. Your exam will evaluate how well you see and identify any potential eye diseases. This includes an intraocular pressure check, biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy to assess corneal and retinal health, as well as the determination of your proper eyeglasses prescription.

During your examination, special eye drops dilate the pupils for a more thorough evaluation. Mild side effects of the drops may include sensitivity to light and blurry vision for two to four hours. Driving is permissible after dilation if you do not have far to travel. We will provide you with disposable sunglasses. Contact lenses may NOT be worn until your pupils return to normal.

Optos and Retinal Imaging

Retinal imaging through the Optos scanning laser ophthalmoscope is encouraged as a form of preventative health care. The images from these scans are used for early detection of disease as well as a baselines for future examinations. These scans provide ultrawide views of the interior of the eye and can be performed when dilation is inconvenient. Click on the picture to the right to find out more about this revolutionary new retinal testing which was featured on "The Doctors" morning tv show.

Retinal imaging is an easy, inexpensive, way to more closely observe the interior of the eye. This sensitive tissue that makes up the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases. It is essential to catch problems early in their progression to avoid vision loss. Imaging through a high resolution digital camera is particularly important for people who have diabetes or high blood pressure since they are prone to problems with the retina that could lead to vision loss.

Contact Lens Fitting

If you wear contact lenses (prescription or just cosmetic) or wish to begin wearing them, you will need a contact lens fitting and evaluation in addition to your eye examination. Contact lenses correct vision by resting directly on your cornea. Because of this direct fitting on the eye, special measurements must be taken to ensure the proper fit. These measurements may change from year to year, even if you have worn contacts for a long time. Your contact lens fitting includes these measurements and all follow-up visits to make sure you are happy with your contact lenses. Once you have come in for your follow-up visit and are satisfied with the comfort and visual acuity of your lenses, your prescription will be finalized. If you have never worn contacts, you will receive special training on the proper care of your lenses and the correct insertion and removal techniques.
